70's movie help?

I vaguely remember a movie i saw a few years ago, and would like to know the name of it so i can see it again.

I don't remember many details, but i do know it took place in the 1970's, and probably wasn't filmed much later than that. It mainly centered around a group of kids and their problems, angst, etc. I do remember that there involved a gun later on, and one of the kids was shot and killed, i don't remember the circumstances. The parents and school had some kind of meeting to discuss the problems their kids were having - and the kids not liking this, basically started a riot in the school and the parking lot.

Sounds close to your description, pretty sure it was in '79.
