Depends, if the drive has completely died, it can't be accessed. If, on the other hand, the drive fires up and it's just the os that isn't working you may be able to connect the drive to a working computer as a slave and retrieve your data. At any rate it's worth a try.
There are places that can retrieve your data by disassembling the drive, placing its disks into a special reader. This is a very expensive operation. You may be without the data for quite some time.
All of this can be avoided by doing periodic "backups".

I'm gonna assume your are running windows (not mac or Linux) depending on your situation you will probably recover a lot of your data, if not all, with a trial version of bad copy pro.
if your crashed hard drive is a backup or if you can still can get into windows on the damaged drive then you should be in the clear. if not get a temporary install on a new drive/ help from someone with a working computer.
just be aware that it takes a lot of time to recover the data.
you might need a few nights depending on how much data you want to recover and how bad its corrupted.
p.s. I'm just speaking from personal experience and i am not affiliated with jufsoft
best of luck and be patient

its possible, but special programs are required. Most likely you will have to pay for the data to be recovered. Im not sure on pricing but you may have to pay up to 200 bucks, unless a friend of yours has one of those spiffy data recovery programs.
Although if you can boot into windows you should be able to throw the data on cds. How bad is this Crash?

If your hard disk has crashed as in nothing will read from it then you can't get the data back.
Well, you can pay a data recovery company, but at thousands of pounds a gigabyte you probably don't want to do that.
