In october my work is taking 2 buses to New York City. I have never actually spent a day in the city. I am taking my little sister with me for her 16th birthday. We will be spending 8hours in the city with no limits on what we can do. Being that I have never been there I have no idea how to spend our 8hrs efficiently. I want to be able to see all the best there is to see and within a decent price range. Any ideas or advice on how to spend the day. Sites to see. Maps of the city. Advice on how to get around. I know our starting point will be Macy's. This is where the bus will be dropping us off and picking us back up. Your advice is muchly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

The advice above me is sound but the distances between their points of interest is too great, making these unreasonable to traverse quickly in less than 8 hours given the traffic and other conditions.

Head out to the SOHO, Little Italy, Chinatown and Greenwich Village areas. These areas are abutting, so you can hop from one district to another quickly by subway of even walking. Most any experience in NYC can be had here, from different cuisines, clubbing, cultural/arts events and cheap shopping.

Whatever you do, do not go into Macy's. The place is huge and you will be wasting your time. Head south to ground zero and wall street. Visit the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. Sorry to say but 8 hours isn't very much and you won't be able to see even a faction of what you want. Head over the Brooklyn Bridge (you can walk in the middle) and have lunch at Grimaldis Pizza. If you have time, visit the Empire State building and times square. Get a day pass for the subway to get around.

Empire State building is a must and if you are near Macy's it is very close. Also Rockefeller Center is marvelous. Do you want to visit the UN? It is a cheap visit for a tourist if you are on a budget.
Would you like to go see the site of the World Trade Center. Subway ride is 25-30 minutes. Also you can walk a few blocks to the Staten Island Ferry. A great ride and free.
That will absorb your 8 hours.

First of all, you won't see a wide range of stuff in only 8 hours. There is simply too much to do/see in this city. If you're starting at Macy's, you could go shopping in Herald Square (which is the street intersection where Macy's is). There is tons of shopping in that area. After that I'd walk 8 blocks north to Times Square. See the sights, takes some pictures. Walk another few blocks east and hit up Rockefeller Center. After that I'd suggest walking up 5th Avenue and checking out all of the designer shops. Walk up 5th Ave for about 12 blocks and you'll be at Central Park! Hang out there for a little bit before you head back down to Macy's to catch your bus.

This will definitely kill 8 hours. Hope this helps!

I'm Not from New York but I've been there Twice and this is what I did I went to Central Park, Time Square,China Town, and Harlem which actually had some pretty good shopping for me atleast and to see the apollo and we ate at sylvias best soul food I ever had. china town has some cool shopping to alot of the stuff is knock off but if you don't care i would go there. We mostly rode the subway we got a fun pass for $5 and you can ride all day and took cabs as well the majority of the time though we were walking We walked like from downtown manatten to central park and times square rode the subway to china town and harlem. Subway is the cheapest way though. the second time I went I rode the ferry from New Jersey to New York and it dropped us off in Lower Manhatten we spent the day down there saw ground zero and we took a stroll through Battery Park
