I have heard that you'll have to use 2 set squares but I don't know how to.

Use the kind of calipers with straight-edge measuring surfaces (not the ice pick looking kind). And, come in from the end instead of the side, since the spiral will not allow the calipers to seat across the diameter otherwise.

As accurately as possible? lay it on a surface table then lay a gauge block across two or more coils on top. measure to top with vernier or digital height gauge and subtract thickness of gauge block

You could use calipers I guess.
