I am not sure what you mean by "go through everything." But please understand that HAZING will not be tolerated and membership will not be extended to anyone who participates in such activities. The term plegding in Alpha Kappa Alpha is to no longer be used. So the question is: Will you be able to participate in the membership intale process (MIP)?
The first leg of MIP is rush and you will be able to attend rush. You will later find our from your prospective chapter if you have been selected for membership or not.
FYI: College is not a walk in the park (at least not for most people), so things happen and you failing Cal is unfortunate, but it is a learning experience. Retake the class and continue to do well in school.
As for membership please review the prospective members section of the International website and you MUST meet the minimum requirements to be considered for membership. Have good community service! Support your local chapter! Read some of the other questions on this site and they may also help with your questions. Gool luck in school!

Talk with your local AKA chapter rep about your GPA and retaking the class. She'll be able to give you a straight answer. Be very honest about what happened - and keep in touch with her through the summer.
P.S. I'm not a big fan of Greeks - but AKA is truly a service organization with high expectations from its members. It's extremely well respected in the post-college world. Even if you have to be a probationary pledge or perhaps wait a year etc. it's worth joining this particular sorority.

Depending on your school, it's all in who you know. Is your GPA over a 2.5? Do you have community service? If not, then worry about those things first before you think about pledging a sorority in which your grades may drop even further. Remember: there is always Grad chapters!

You probably will be allowed to pledge.. it all depends on your school's greek policies. Alot of sororities make study sessions madatory for pledges.. this will help. (And they have study groups, help in classes, etc available for sisters) Goodluck!
Also - I pledged and joined a sorority in college - it was one of the most wonderful experiences I've ever had. I now have some amazing, strong women as my lifelong best friends... It is not "buying" friendship. The money you pay (which isn't a lot) just goes into hosting social / fundraising events.. My sorority did TONS of community service.. habitat for humanity, breast cancer walks.. etc. Don't listen to anyone who wants to stereotype the entire greek system.

You should most certainly check with the chapter at your school you wish to join. At my school one has to have a 2.5 overall GPA and a 2.5 current GPA before the semester she submits. This question will be solely determine by your institution. May I invite you to join akawannabes a yahoo group designed for interested ladies such as you and me. If you need more info please email me at akawannabes-owner@yahoogroups.com. Good luck with your pursuits.

If they look at your GPA at the time of pledging, and you will have already retaken the course and done better on it by then, you should be fine. Nobody worries about problems which you have already fixed.

I think if I were you I would be more worried about my grades in classes than joining a sorority to buy my friends. You go to college to learn. I'm guessing you have someone else pay your fees (like Daddy). Protip: Use your time wisely in school. Leave a stronger, more educated person. Not a drunk, vapid loser.
