Rents will vary from borough to borough. Having lived in Queens, I would think you should plan on at least 1,000 dollars rent/month. There are some very nice 2 and 3-family apartments in mostly residential areas which seem much more homey than an apartment building. Look for ones which only charge gas and electric, but pick up the heating. You should be able to pay a total of 200/month on these for most of the year. You will of course need a phone. Parking is something to be very aware of; you don't need to come home from work and spend an additional hour looking for a parking space, then need to get up early to move your car because of "alternate side" parking. Garbage pickup as well as water are usually included in the rent. Be aware of window exposure to the sun in the summer and stay away from the top floor when the roof is tarred. These factors can add on to or save you on electricity for an air conditioner. Try to find someplace where you are not excessively far from public transportation. Stay away from buildings which are over or next door to bars (noise), stop lights (noise), delis or restaurants (bugs).
Good luck!!

I happen to live in the area you are talking about, so let me break it down for you. 1 bed room apartment $550-850 a month utilities all around 100 to 200$ a month. Gas is now around $3.00 again. check out the website below it shows most of the nice apartments in the area, but does not show the town homes and other apartments for rent only the places that pay to be in it. hope this helps.

Depends where in New York.
Certain areas of Manhatten can cost you 3k for a hole in the wall 1 bedroom aprt.
Generally speaking for anything decent in Manhatten you are looking at at least 2k for a 1 bedroom. Even studios are 1500 plus.
However in the Bronx, Queens, Brooklyn you can still find somewhat decent deals.

In Manhattan, you can bank on at least $2,500. per month for a one bedroom rental. Outside of Manhattan in the boroughs, a one bedroom would probably cost you between $900. and $1,200. Utilities will run you approx. $300. per month.

Where in New York?
Upstate isn't as expensive as the city. Albany isn't too expensive.

Housing can be very affordable upstate.
But taxes are still ridiculously high - income, property AND sales taxes are high.
