I saw it too. And it made me sick, and then angry. I hope that the boy that did it gets a long sentence and that his fellow prisoners see that video and make his time go very slowly.
The victim is an American hero and deserves our support. He is in my prayers for a speedy recovery.

I haven't seen it. How many people were there?
I am not saying you are wrong. I'd bet you are right! But just to play devil's advocate: it is likely one or more of the people called the police on their cell phones, which is an act, albeit it a safe one. Most law enforcement agencies actually suggest that people do NOT interfere with crimes in action, because there are dangers involved. Depending on the nature of the attack, they may have been afraid. Were the people watching men, women, or children? If one of them tried to help, would anyone else? And, most importantly, what if it turned out the guy had a gun? Is one old man worth dying for if you have a wife and family at home?
I'd argue that they still should have helped. I'm just saying that it isn't always so clear or black and white when the situation arises. We all think we would help, but you never really know until you are in the situation.
That said, I haven't seen the video. It may have been obvious he had no weapons. Or there might have been three dozen, buff men watching it for all I know. If that be the case, then you're right on!

All I have to say is "Capitol Punishment" and not having it is why our Country and the people in it are completley Out of Control! Why not commit highly offensive crimes? All you get is a steady place to lay your head, your child support stops, and three meals a day, oh did I mention you get to watch t.v, a commisary account, and play basketball? It's appaling, that our government honestly thinks that throwing murderers and molesters in a small cement cell for 10-20 years is going to make them an anymore viable part of society when they come out? Are they seriuos? They let these unstable people out to become repeat offenders and a statistic. It's disgusting. Maybe these criminals would think twice before killing someone or raping or molesting some innocent child if they knew our goverment was living by the age old rule of "An Eye for an Eye". Our education for our children is depleting meanwhile I have to pay taxes to keep these people safe and sound in prison, while my son's football team got cut this year. And when I say capitol punishment I mean a .23cent bullet in the back of the head, Do you know how many people are on Death Row and have been for years...Charlie Manson for example, but we wouldn't want to actually do it one day because the goverment makes to much $ when someone wants to interview him. I was a juror for a trial where the man got life in prison, (which thank goodness, he'll never be on the streets again) but why lifetime in prison, so we can pay for him to live there for 55 years? (he was 23) spare us the expense and do him in...he has no business in society anyway.

You asked 'is there something they could get charged with?' - actually it's exactly why people DON'T react. Cos they could be charged with DOING something. I saw the incident and talked about it with many people, and most of them agree it's the US laws that prevent bystanders from interfering with an incident. Too often these people ended up being involved in the thing the wrong way, and most of them would even teach their kids to stay away from trouble, even in cases like this, which should be obvious to everyone. The fear they feel (of the offender) is overwhelming. And the laws are not helping either.

Pathetic! If the perpetrator had been white and the elderly gentleman a black citizen, would it have been called a hate crime? YOU BET! And Al and Jesse would have called a march and there might have been riots. But where are the reverends; have they done anything to denounce these thugs who prey on the vulnerable among us? This piece of trash should face a charge of attempted murder. He tried to kill this old man instead of getting a job and earning a ride. Our society is sick!!!!!

I'm in the UK and I saw that when I was channel hopping and I was outraged. I don't know what I would do in a similar situation, not knowing if the attacker was armed, but there were enough bystanders to have formed a posse and done something.
How could anyone beat up a frail old man in that manner? And one that had done so much for his country as well.

This guy needs to be put away for life. No need to have him walking the streets to prey on others. Attacking a person who is not able to defend himself is no better than an animal. I am sure some of these folks were probably in shock or had fear of their own safety. It is too bad they couldn't have overcome him some way though.

The others may have been wondering if the assailant had a gun or not. They could have at least yelled at him to stop and they could have pulled their car up behind the old man's car.
I think, for myself, I would have intervened after trying to assess whether there was a weapon or not. I am going get a concealed weapon license for such incidents as these.

I have not seen that, where was it?
What a horrible thing, just stand there and watch...
I know someone who saw an elderly lady being kicked and robbed, he took a sandblaster to the jerk doing it because it's what he had in his hand... he got charged with assault... not the other guy. Doesn't that suck?
