I asked this question late last night and only got a few responses so I'm hoping to get some more today. I am having big problems with my computer at home and I am ready to chuck it out the window. I have a Dell Dimension Desktop and for some reason I went to go turn it on last night and it looked as if it started up ok but when it got to the part where your desktop icons are visible after a few seconds they just disappear and there's nothing on the monitor but the "Dell" background, even the tackbar is gone. Has this happened to anyone? Thanks so much for any help.
p.s. of course the warranty is up already too!!

I tried that with the taskbar and I can't even get the arrows to pull it, it's just like the icons and the taskbar are gone. They are there for about 2 seconds when I first get the computer on then they're gone.

First, press the key on your keyboard with the Windows logo on it. That should make th Start menu appear. If the taskbar has been "hidden" it should also appear.

Then right click on the desktop and click on "Arrange Icons By". Make sure that "Show Icons" is checked.

If you still can not get the start menu/taskbat to appear, do a crtl+alt+delete. If you have something running in the background that may clear it and allow the PC to finish booting. Go to the "Task manager" and see if there is anything running. If there is, do an "End Task" to shut it down. That may allow the PC to finish booting.

This happens on my eMachines. Two things could have happened, you have gotten a virus, or you have a glitch in your Windows program. Try copying everything to CD's or DVD's and then uninstalling everything including Windows. Reinstall Window's and then every program that you still need. Then transfer your files back onto your computer. That should help IF it is a glitch in the Windows program. You may want to check to see if it is a virus first by scanning your computer. Solve any errors through that BEFORE you uninstall everything.

if you cant see or do anything on your computer after it has booted up. try booting into the windows boot menu and run "last known good configuration" to get to this menu, try pressing the f8 key a few times when your computer is first starting up, you should see the menu options at that time. This option will tell your computer to boot from its last known working configuration.

It seems to me that you have adware.

My advice is to go to www.bitdefender.com or http://www.infectedornot.com and check your pc for adware and spyware. It’s free and their virus definitions are updated.
