x^2 + 5x - 14 = (x + 7)(x - 2)

The reason you know the signs in front of a and b are different is because of the negative sign in front of the 14. That is the only way you could get a negative sign there.

The "+5" comes from the sum of "a" and "b". So in order for the 5 to be positive, the larger number would have to be positive, which is "a". If "b" was larger, then the numeral in front of "x" would be negative.

The factored quantities are (x+7) and (x-2). Therefore

first of all u should read that the multipication of two polynomials are commutative. so
(x + a)(x - b) and (x - b)(x + a) are same
here u can compare n get
a=7 n b=2
