Usually you just pin and then cut around the fabric. Sometimes, however, you mark darts and such. Use chalk.

First of all............. what are you trying to do?
Sewing and using a pattern? Cut around the pattern pieces. The pattern can be reused again and again.
embroidery and trying to transfer a pattern? Some of the patterns are iron transferable and can be used several times or
if the iron is not - then you can make an iron transfer by using a transfer pencil directions will come with the pencil or you can use a water soluble pen and trace the pattern by using a light box or place the pattern you want to copy on a window and place the fabric over the pattern and trace.
Good luck and I hope this helps........................

At school we had to make a line on the outside of the pattern with thread.
You make a normal stitch and next one with a loop, so you can separate the layers and cut in-between, and there will be a line on top and one on the bottom of the double layered fabric. But it is a lot of work and for most patterns not needed.

usually you can just pin the pattern to the fabric and cut out the pattern but you could also use chalk to trace the pattern or you could use a fabric marker to trace the pattern but don't iron over line from the fabric marker because once you iron over it the ink won't come out

you dont transfer the pattern, you lay the pattern out on the fabric, and cut around it, then pin mark darts if there are any, you should go to joanns or some place and get some beginning lessons.

Try using chalk. It is easy and washes out. There is also tracing paper that you can pick up at your sewing supply store. Good luck
