In order to dance, you need to be able to feel the beat or the rythm of the music. Your feet should move in time with the music. Thus, a waltz is a three beat dance to go along with the three beat music it comes from. 1-2-3, 1-2-3 and so on. The guy starts with the left foot and the girl starts with the right foot. It goes L-R-L, R-L-R, and so on. The ladies are just the opposite. In another sense you would say forward-side-together, back-side-together. That completes the first box and then you repeat it and add variations as you become comfortable with it. Foxtrot is a four beat dance that goes along with the four beat music. Latin dances have special rythms and beats that match the special music they come from.
Simply put, you move with the music. That cannot be taught in a forum such as this. You need to go to a dance school. Classes are available for all ages. It is fun and the very best way to recreate in close contact with the opposite sex.
Enjoy

Try taking 8 weeks of belly dance classes, or buy the DVD "Instant Bellydancer" from Amazon and work with it to learn how to do the moves, especially the "fast music" stuff like hip lifts, hip drops, shimmies, hip bumps, etc. You'll find that belly dance moves work really well on the dance floor when you're out freestyle dancing with a partner.

I've been to Egypt, and I've seen the men belly dancing at wedding receptions. Over there, both men and women belly dance at parties as their social dance. Believe me, when a male body does the moves, they do look masculine. And if you're doing them wearing your normal clothes, dancing to your normal music, no one's going to think you're swishy.

It depends on the type of music you are dancing to. It is in the beat that you move to. What kind of dancing is is that you want to do? Salsa dancing is different from hip hop but if you can feel the beat then that will help you to move with the song.

u just have to feel the music, music is expression as well as self interpretation. not everything u do has to make sense, it just has to come from within. sure there is a technical aspect to it, but if ur not into being professional then just go with the flow. "Dance as though Nobody is Watching"

Find the rhythm in your body and just go with it. If you have to think about what you're doing when you dance then you're not really dancing.

I'll tell you what Skeeter told Doug on the Nickelodeon show:
"First you move your arms like there's an itch on your back you can't reach. Then you move your legs like there's an earthquake. And then you take all that and turn it on hyperdrive."
