I guess no one looked at your photo. That must be one heck of a bowl!

Maybe you should have taken him out before he got too big to fit through the opening. Anyway, I don't know what good a needle will do - this seems more like a situation where a hammer and a 3,000 gallon tank would work better!

Everyone was probably thinking "moon" as in platy: http://www.elacuarista.com/atlas/images/platy-moon1.jpg

it's alive and in a bowl too small. this is a puzzle.

1. no needles
2. do you have a new large bowl/tank to put the fish in?
3. put the bowl with the fish in it, inside the new tank that is filled with water. so the fish can acclimate to the new tank water.
i unfortunately don't know how long for such a huge fish. (I'll try to find out..maybe someone else knows on here) an hour i'd say.
4. somehow break the old bowl, without hurting the fish. and it will be free in the new tank.
now that's the hard part! breaking the bowl. glass cutter?

could you use a glass cutter around the top of the bowl it's in now without harming the fish. i mean without putting the bowl in a tank.

okay, panic. smash the bowl. pick the fish off the floor (or do it in a giant bath tub/jacuzzi with water or somewhere like that) and put it in new tank prepared for it.

No, The needle will harm the fish. You can go to your local pet store and buy small nets for your fish. Punshering the fish with a needle to extract it would damage/kill the fish. if you can't find a net small enough, then start pouring the dirty water into a seperate bowl, when the water get shallow enough, then gently move the fish into the seperate bowl. The fish will be in shock at first, but will calm down, so don't be scared if it dosn't move.
NEVER clean anything in the bowl with soap.
NEVER use tap water in your bowl; it will kill the fish. If you can't find purified water, then let tap water sit out without being moved for 3-5 days; it will eleminate the chlorine.
I wish you good luck!

But if the fish is dead, use and do anything you want to.

If its dead then i wouldnt see why you couldnt take it our with a needle but if its alive thats a no go area, The only way to take it out is to crack the tank, Or saw it if its acylic, Why did you let it grow to this size in a small lided tank, Im assuming its somthing like a bi0rb or somthing? Not very helpful but ah well,

The only way without harming the fish will be to place the bowl in a larger container of water and break the bowl.
