Local small pet store. It'll probably cost more than at one of the big box stores, but the quality of the advice there is "priceless".

You can usually buy kits at the chain stores like Petsmart/co/etc., and sometimes you can get some good deals on a whole package (Tank, stand, hood, filter, heater, etc.) at smaller fish stores. If you have the patience and time for such a thing (I know I don't, haha), you could also try garage or yard sales to find stuff REALLY cheap. =)

Petsmart has starter kits in different sizes. Heater filter hoods for decent prices compared to separately. I got 47, 55, 2- tens and a twenty there.

Greetings

Goto pet warehouses. They typically have a large interent based business and large showrooms.

Places like thatpetplace.
I have always found elmers aquuarium far cheaper than petco/petsmart.

Also, look for a used setup. A 55 gallon with a cabinet stand can be bought for $150 or so. sites are live.com, craigslist.org ...

Hope this helps

I agree with PeeTee, independent shops are more reliable and it's nice to support small business. Do yourself a favor though and put together your own package, even if it costs you a bit more. 'Kits' all to often come with lousy equipment and it's better to do some research choose your own stuff.

Depending on what you want to use it for. If you're going saltwater, any pet store will have what you need. If you're going saltwater. I would go to a store that specializes in that.
