I'm renting an apartment in Michigan, I was late on rent this month and got a notice from my landlord saying I had 7 days to pay or move out.

I am planning on moving out but I need more time! I thought landlords had to give you 30 days to leave.

What does your lease say? They need to give you 30 days notice, unless you signed something that said otherwise. Check your lease, and if it doesn't say they can kick you out in a week, then I'd give them a call and tell them they can't legally evict you without giving you 30-day notice, IN WRITING. Good luck!

if you have a lease they have to give you 30 days. but if you don't have a lease they can give you the time they tell you. 1 thing if you have a lease they will serve you papers to move out. but you have to be home and answer the door. no one answer the door you buying you a little more time. also when they do serve you the papers you then go to court. can be from 30 days to 90 days. then the court will then give you like 30 days to move out. good luck. if you rent a place always get a lease.

yes they do, your landlord i threatening you bc he has NOT filed official paperwork. i have done many evictions to tenants. if they fail to pay after 30 days then you need to serve them with a 30 day eviction notice. if you wait for them to file paper work, go to court, get served and have a sherif actually come and change the locks the official eviction proceedings take close to 4 months. if u want to stay for non payemtn stay as long as u like bc they cant officially change the locks and kick you out without a court order which takes close to 4 months to get and actually enforce. but be prepared to be harassed and stressed out bc ur landlord seems to like do things illegally so your in for a lot of stress!

FYI NO ONE CAN CHANGE UR LOCKS WITHOUT GIVING U AN OFFICIAL COURT DOCUMENTED EVICTION LETTER, OTHERWISE CHANGING TH ELOCKS IS CONSIDERED ILLEGAL ESP IF U HAVE A LEASE. U HAVE A RIGHT TO RESIDE THERE DRUING THAT TIME PERIOD REGARDLESS OF NOT PAYING RENT THATS WHY THEY NEED A COURT DOCUMENT TO STATE OTHERWISE.

They can send you a letter saying you have to leave in that amount of time but if you do not leave they can not lock you out until they go to go and get you evicted which could take up to 60 days.
