knives point down, everything else we point up

Handles pointing down, and here is my reason...
Let's say it's a fork: the end that you eat off of might have food on it...if it is stuck down in the "basket" w/ all the other silverware, the water/soap cannot flow freely in between all the silverware to clean the fork properly.....in turn, making it still somewhat dirty when the cycle is done...
I do however put very sharp knives pointing down, just for safety reasons....

Everything is supposed to point up. That way they are exposed to more of the cleaning spray. That includes knife blades. Yes they are a cutting hazard but as long as you expect them you won't have a problem putting your hand down on them.

We used to have tableware that had skinny handles that tended to slide down through the bottom of the basket and catch on the door edge when we slid the tray out. That forced us to always put things in handle up and the cleaning on them was OK but not great. Now that we have new tableware with fatter handles we try to put them in handle down and they are always cleaner no matter how many we pack in there.

Actually they should be mixed. If all the silverware faces the same way there is a higher likelihood that they will layer (meaning two like utensils lay flatly on each other preventing one side of each from being cleaned).

Handles up cause some of them are so thin they fall through the basket and keep the spinney thing from moving.

Safety first:
anything with blades or points the handles go up, otherwise it is down.
It is a safety thing, not a convienence thing.
