My son LOVES grape juice! If I let him, he will drink 4 or 5 sippy cups full. I dilute it with half water, and make sure that I buy the juice with the least amount of sugar, but I'm still worried about him drinking too much. I give him water, but he'll only drink about half a cup, and milk, but he'll only drink about half a cup of that as well. He's still nurses though so I'm not too worried about the milk thing cause he also eats alot of cheese and yogurt. I should say that he will be a year next week.

If you are diluting the juice he is fine. Be thankful he is getting the fluids he needs.

He loves the suger - stop giving it to him or else gradually reduce the amount of juice to water until it's the barest hint. There is sugar in everything these days - he doesn't need more, esp at 1 year old. Think of what's happening to any new teeth coming through - first thing they meet is sugar!!

Is he very active? Could be the juice. Think about the additives / preservatives also. That colour has to come from some chemical. That's a lot of bad things to put into your son's body at such an early age!! He may even sleep better (not saying he doesn't sleep well, but honestly, what 1 year old lets mum have a full night sleep????) - wouldn't that be nice?

Babies only ever need water to drink and breast milk. A baby will never die of thirst if there is water available - Nature gives them a pretty good sense of survival so that they will drink when they need to and if water is all that is available, then that is what he will drink - even if it's only a sip. If he needs more he'll drink more.

Don't let him get into the habit of having juice all the time. Give him water, water, water.

All those dentist studies they're talking about go on and on and on about the sugar in fruit juice and how it leads to decay and obesity.....so start your baby out right.

If you think about it, a body breaks down anything it intakes to the good and the bad. What it would take of the juice is the water - so why make the body work too hard? Give the water first.

If he HAS to have the juice - for Pete's sake, DON'T give him 5 cups!!! Give him 1 as a reward and ignore the screaming. Distract him and he'll forget and after a while he may not even ask. You could even just give him half a cup - 5 half cups is only 2.5 all together, etc. And keeping watering it down.

Good luck!! Be strong. You're the Boss!! He's the baby. It won't hurt him to cry.......

A child under 2 should have no more than 4 oz. of juice a day.

Stick to 100% juice - NOT the "reduced sugar" juice... I don't know how they take out the natural fruit sugars - but they add SPLENDA!!!! NOT in MY baby's body!! No thank you!

If you're giving more than 4oz. you're setting him up for obesity, diabetes, and worse. Those are basically empty calories that could be better spent on REAL fruit and veggies. Stick to milk and water in the sippy.

Juice has a lot of sugar in it. So it probably isn't good for his teeth. Also juice adds a lot of extra calories more than children need. They are now worried about childhood obesity since it is on the rise for somer eason. But my daughter is that way too guzzle guzzle guzzle the juice down! Infact I really didn't think too much about it but I was looking for a meal plan and I red that babies beginning at 6 mon. and toddlers should only have 4-6 oz of juice a day. Um....it would take my daughter about 2 minutes to down 4-6 oz.=) I have tried cutting back too but my daughter is 2. My 7 year old has great teeth and he is so tiny and he loved his juice too. I just make sure to brush her teeth and I do what you do dilute it. They should be fine!

I think it is to much juice.
Try to dilute it down gradually until it is 80% water then his 5 cups are really only 1.
And I would be brushing his teeth at least twice a day.
Good luck!

You have to set limits. Kids love sweets, and they would eat them all day, if you let them. Obviously we don't. I limit my daughter to one cup of juice a day. The rest of the day she gets milk or water, those are her only options. How much she drinks of those is up to her. As long as he is getting nutrition from food, don't worry too much about how much milk and water he drinks, just make sure it's available to him and that he is getting some of it. So yes, there is such a thing as too much juice.

hi,

some children do generally drink more than others it could be something that he is eating may make him thristy, possibly dry biscuits of something with quite a bit of salt in??

if these are all normal it may just be that he likes grape juice!
Your definately doing the right thing by diluting it.

If you are still concerned i would say to ask your Health visitor of GP for there advice.
