Man, that's a tought questions. There is no No. 1 thing. Too much great stuff goes on here to skip. I guess the fact that, as big cities go, it's pretty affordable. Great public transportation so it's easy and cheap to get around, housing costs haven't gone through the roof (yet); You can get a nice one bedroom here for about $800 a month - in NYC $800 a month might get you a rat infested studio. We]'ve got a beach, so you can bike ride, rollerblade or just lay on the sand and watch the hard bodies go by just like in Florida. And yeah, it gets cold and snows here, but what do you expect, it's the Midwest?Every ethnicity in the world lives here, so if you like samping world cuisine, you'll find it here. It has a team in every major sport if you're a sports nut. A FANTASTIC music scene; name the type of music and you'll find a bar that features it. And every major musical act HAS to come to Chicago to play. Also, a lot of bars stay open until 4 a.m. during the week and 5 am. on weekends. Great architecture, great parks, surprisingly clean for a city of it's size (again, compare it to NYC). Neighborhoods to fit every stage of your life: party-bar neighborhoods for the "frat" crowd, hipster neighborhoods for the indie band crowd, yuppie loft neighborhoods for the urban professional crowd, quiet residential streets for the newly married crowd, and homes for the starting-a-family crowd.
Like I said, it's hard to name just ONE thing.

Chicago is a fantastic to visit...in the summer. I can't pick one reason to move there, but I can tell you the number 1 reason to move from there. THE WINTERS! LOL I grew up there and I love it, all of it. Best big city in America by far. The wind chill is brutal. But another person was right, you haven't been to a baseball game until you've seen the CUBS! The fans are knowledgeable, and friendly ( unless you are a Mets fan) The best is when they r winning of course. You have to get tickets early in the season or you won't get them. Unless you stand on-line the day of the game. they hold a few back at will call, across from the fire station on Waveland Ave. They used to go on sale at 10 am the day of, I have no idea if that still holds true.

I lived in Chicago for 5 years. My mother has lived there most of her life... I have to say the #1 reason people move there is because they can find a job,- that, and escape whatever hell hole they've been used to living in, like Russia, Ethiopia, or Vietnam, or a Mississippi sheriff. Chicago is somewhere where at least you can get a job and an unlisted phone number.
That is guaranteed. You may not LIKE your job or the life, but you'll have a job and a life.
Other than that, there aren't too many other reasons to move there, because if you live there long, just too many horrible things go down there to make it enjoyable. Cops beating up bar hostesses, people homeless and stealing from each other, racial and ethnic strife, segregation. (C'mon, looking at buildings or eating hot dogs is no reason to love a city.)
And, by the way, the winters in Chicago suck, every single one of them since the town was established. Every five of the winters I spent in Chicago were absolutely horrible experiences, freak blizzards in March and April, streets icy and slick, old ladies falling down and never getting back up again, bone breaking car stalling weather. Winters so bad, you'll learn it doesn't pay to assist anyone, or you'll probably lose fingers to frostbite in the effort.
I would choose anywhere in the USA to live than Chicago. Milwaukee? Fine. A lower cost of living, more nature to enjoy, and better beer. Mississippi? Great. More Watermelons, warmer climate and better music. The USA is a vast and amazing country. Don't waste it all in Chicago.

I grew up there and Chicago has many world class museums, great restaurants and the best public transportation in America. Also, Chicago is a great sports venue. You have not seen baseball until you spend a day at Wrigley and sit in the left field bleachers. The winters are brutal but everyone knows that and dresses for it. Great city....

I have lived in Chicago my entire 27 years. Like many cities, it has its up's and down's. The good things:
You will never go hungry....there are so many great places to eat.
There is always something to do...museums, parades, festivals, ball games.
The surrounding suburbs are a great place to live.
The bad things:
Traffic congestion is a joke.
There is ALWAYS construction work being done on each highway.
Crime..do not venture into certain parts of the city after sundown.
That is all that I can think of off the top of my head. Hope it helps.

We have 4 seasons...Spring + Fall are short but they do exist.
People are friendly and willing to help if needed.
$$$...there seems to be plenty of good jobs for those who want to work.
Excellent restaurants...many 4 star places and ethnic eateries from countless cultures ...many reasons for getting fat.
Easy connections to all parts of the country and world.
World class public transportation...many people are carless.
Top notch entertainment at various venues. All types of music from Alternative Jazz to Zydeco.
Too many city events and suburban activities to mention.
Sports teams in every sport...even Lacrosse and indoor football.
Excellent museums (53) and 2 fantastic zoos.
Our beaches don't have salt water rolling over them...that means no Portuguese man-of war, barracudas, nor sharks to terrorize the waders.
This year the cicadas will amaze you...not alligators.
You will enjoy the many facets of Chicago. Some are expensive but many are free...welcome!
