I was told when I was little that you say "God Bless You" when someone sneezes. Along time ago, and even some cultures today, thought that when you sneezed your soul was leaving your body. So when they said "God Bless You" it kept your soul with you. I guess it has been shortened to Bless you, and non religious people say bleshyou (or it might be slang).

I do but I have a friend who is a Jehovah's witness and told me that it is wrong to say "bless you" when she sneezes. So now I am aware of when Im in public of who I say it to. However, I still say it to family and other friends. Its nice to say it as long as it respects others as well.

I always do it 'cause here in Russia everybody does that, sort of tradition. It even seems a bit strange to me when someone doesn not say anything if I sniff or sneeze.

I always do... it's almost a compulsion... yesterday, sitting in traffic, with my window rolled down, a man next to me sneezed... I tried to hold back, but I couldn't! I yelled, "Bless you!" over to his car... I do it so much that it was two of my childrens' first sentences...
and when dating, I always use that as one of my deciding factors as to whether the person is actually polite and thoughtful. :-)

Yes I do say it.
As a rule it is not good behavior to say "bless you" to someone, when there are more than 3 people in the room.

I say it because it is just as much a reflex as sneezing is! I have a friend that resents people saying that because she thinks people don't really mean it. Do you think that is true?

I sure do, I read somewhere back in the day, people thought if you sneezed you would lose your soul, so if you said"bless you" you wouldnt lose it!! Weird huh?? lol
