Good question. If the person isn't considered an adult then they shouldn't be in the military.
If at 18 you can join the military, then you sholuld also have all of the rights of an adult .

Because the two things are completely unrelated to one another. The alcohol issue is tied to maturity. It is deemed that most 18 year olds are not responsible enough to drink, and drunk driving and binge drinking statistics back this up. You can die for your country at 18, however, because at 18 you have the physical stamina and ability to fire a gun and survive under harsh conditions. It has nothing to do with maturity, because in the military you are in a controlled environment with special training that eliminates the maturity factor. Is it right? You be the judge, but that is how it is.

Um... because drinking is unhealthy?
Okay, seriously enough, the laws on alcohol in most of Europe make a lot more sense. They pretty much don't have any minimum age, with the exception that you have to be 18 to be in a bar after 10pm without a parent. Couple that with the minimum age to drive being 18, and you have a society that is generally more responsible about drinking and driving.
You know, it's easier for a 16 year old to buy Crack than Beer?

I'm not 100% on this, but I have heard that members of certain military branches, if not all, are allowed to drink, regardless of age, at certain times on military bases

Because we have graveyards full of teenagers that think they can drink and drive. It has been seen time and time again that teens don't make good choses about drinking!

Because when you enlist and go to bars and all on bases, and I think even regular places now, you show your military ID and you are allowed to purchase alcohol.

I ask that question all the time. It makes ZERO sense.
I've often wondered if someone who is 19 joined the military (regardless of whether they went off to war) goes into a bar would be denied a drink bc they aren't old enough.
Seems a little backward that your old enough to join the military and go off to war (and may not come back) but you can't have a lousy beer.
