Yes and no...this is an outdated statement...but generally if you have possession of an item you are presummed to be the owner and anyone challeging it must show that you stole it or it really belongs to them. Ownership trumps possession if you can prove you own it or the police prove it was stolen. So there is no fraction or formula that give a possessor rights it just means that it is theres until someone proves it is not.

No, I think only about half of the prisoners in federal penitentiaries are there for simply possessing something unlawful.

Seriously, this is a saying that is outdated. I think the federal tax code probably makes up about two thirds of the laws in this country.

if you have it, you are responsible for it. don´t mean you always own it. like if its in your car, "drugs" weather or not its yours, you go to jail and your car gets impounded. same as in your house. don´t matter who owns it, its on or in your property and you are the one in trouble.

That is how the law reads from my understanding. you may want to check with your local law enforcement on more details.
