We will definitely not travel like we have the last few summers! I have decided that this is the first practical way that our family can impact the usage of gas. We will stay much closer to home, use public transportation when we are in big cities and consider local air or long distance rail service. If all of us did this we could likely reduce consumption by a percentage that would make an impact. Of course, Congress or the President (yeah, that's likely) capping the price would certainly help -- except for the gas lines that would develope.

The issue isn't individual ability to afford the gas! It would be an attempt to decrease overall gas consumption in this country by even 2-5 %, maybe more, for the summer. Even 1% would impact the price per gallon. Last summer we spent 2 weeks in NYC, 2 weeks in DC and 2 weeks on the Outer Banks (obviously I can afford $200 more), all driving one and sometimes two vehicles so my contribution would be significant. Summer before we put 36,000 miles on one vehicle for the summer. I plan to do much better but not in an effort to save personally. Someone going to Fla could save their precious vacation time by flying down (very cheap now) and renting a car or using locally available transportation once there. The toe that the oil companies have us by right now is our gasoline for autos and we must fight this some way. And it is still liikely to increase each year, I agree.

Nixon 'fixed' all prices of everything including wages to control inflation in the 70s. You just DO it. Also, don't be fooled about crude oil prices and how much of the revenue goes to whom. It is interesting research. I suggest some of tyou engage in it.

No, no longer yet. gas costs have continuously been severe right here in Italy. actual now, unleaded is a million.37 euro in keeping with liter that's sort of such as $7 / gallon on the present substitute fee. there have been cases whilst it advance into around $10/gal. I frequently take the practice different places throughout the time of the three hundred and sixty 5 days and then flow to the US in August to flow to relatives throughout the time of the August trip era right here. except something differences severely, i'm probably to do an analogous next 3 hundred and sixty 5 days. thankfully, I actual have particularly some regular flyer miles saved up that i could desire to apply for the flight if needed. I do walk plenty right here however somewhat than taking the vehicle for short journeys.

Quite honestly, if I had the option to take a vacation, I would do it. However, it looks like besides a weekend road trip to New York this summer, won't have much of an opportunity to go. I've already cut down on my consumption over the past week by getting another job in the city closest to me and then moving to that city. However, given my screw schedule between unpredictable work hours, school schedule and need to go to the gym, public transportation is not an option for m.

Let's see. It would take us about 2 tanks of gas to go to Florida for a week or two, say another 2 tanks while down there, and another 2 tanks coming back up. At current prices that would probably cost us about $100-150 extra over what we would have paid last year. If that amount of money would break us over what we had already set aside for a vacation, we probably shouldn't be going on vacation anyway.

Edit: I get what you are trying to do, but I saw one stat a few weeks ago that said if every single American parked their cars tomorrow and never drove again, we wouldn't make more than 6 years worth of difference because countries like China and India would pick up our slack in gas utilization. So where we go on vacation this year really doesn't matter much, does it?

Nope,

I figure that if other people change their plans,

There will be plenty of gasoline for me to go ahead with my normal plans, and I get the added benefit of having a less crowed vacation,

Do to the fact that the others will all be staying home.

.

How could congress or the president cap gasoline prices ?

When they do not control the price of the major price componet of gasoline,

IE: oil

The price of gas will go up no matter what. It is a limitted resource and as supply is reduced the price will go up.

Price controls will not have the effect you are looking for. Nixon tried price controls in the 1970's and it was a disaster.

The best solution will be alternative fuels. Nuclear being the most practical at this point.
