historically, i meant, like was it derived from a word the Druids used? I'm sure the Celts, the Brits, the Welsh, and Irish all had different terms and had to come up with a unifying response.

it originated in the fishing and whaling trades, when one seaman passed aknife to another seaman, they were seldom cleansed while cutting up fish, the words thank you were a signal that the second seaman had a firm grip on the knife and the first could let go of it , it was also used at night up in the riggings especially at night when they could only feel the ropes, when sails had to be rearranged, they used those words to signal when one line had been successfully passed from one hand to another.

from the first time a cave woman slaved all day cooking a brontasaurus and the cave man tried going to bed after enjoying the meal....but not expressing his gratitude properly....she taught him....lol after expressing her righteous indignation with a bone upside his hairy head

since the english language was constructed, people wanted to express their feeling of gratitude towards another person. therefore, the words (thank) which means to express gratitude and (you) which stands for the second person. hope this helps

I've often wondered where "your welcome" has gone. Americans seem to have replaced it with "sure" or "you bet". Neither of which sounds correct or polite.
