can I cut that limb and save the tree? They're beautiful.

Absolutely...first rule of pruning...always remove dead material. Give it a clean cut and dont worry about it. Trees do this. It may have had wind damage or kid damage or succumbed to heavy frost. A tree protects itself from freezing by shucking limbs first. It will sacrifice limbs to save itself.

Absolutely, the trees will occasionally drop limbs.. My pecan tree, for example, loses a limb every other year or so and it is doing fine....

if you cut it off and see that the inside is rotting, and if the rot continues into the trunk of the tree, then its probably too late to save it, but your best chance would be to cut it off before it rots or before the rot spreads.
