Must one declare oneself liberal, conservative, or moderate?

What is the penalty for not doing so?

Labels are handy ways of describing oneself without going into long explanations, BUT ONLY when one's beliefs happen to fall into the definitions of the label.

I cannot describe myself as a "conservative" or "liberal" but I can say "I'm liberal on most social issues & conservative on fiscal issues." And that would give you a good idea of what my opinions might be on gay marriage, wellfare, legalized marijuana & many other topics.

The problem is when people accept a label & decide what they "should believe" according to that label. "Gee, I'm a 'conservative' so I should be against gay marriage."

Actually, I usually describe myself as "a bit of a libertarian, leaning towards Republican."

The penalty is ridicule from the lemmings.
