The Witches of Eastwick.

The book (by john Updike) dragged on horribly and the results of the "spells" the women did were never really seen. I literally do not know a single person who has ever said they liked the book and my wife is the only person I know who actually finished it (she claims there are only 2 books she did not finish that weren't textbooks).

I would say at least 40-70% of the people I know who saw the movie said they liked it and it has an IMDB user's rating of 6.3. There is also a thread on the IMDB discussion boards about the book.

Edit - I also agree with Postcards from the Edge, although the movie is VERY different from the book. I do not include books that came out as merchandising for the movie (like the Star Wars books or The Mummy Returns (2001) because it was based on the movie and the dialog just doesn't transition well into a novel.

'Awakenings', starring Robyn Williams and Robert de Nero. The book was written by Oliver Sacks about the research that has made him world famous. While there is no doubt that he is a brilliant mind, he is a dull writer - he's a clinical researcher. The movie brought alive all the emotion and magic that Sacks failed to instill in the book. This is a must see movie, and despite what I said about the book, I recommend you reading it after you've seen the movie. You'll apppreciate it more.

To Kill a Mockingbird--
Gregory Peck just made that book come alive for me. He was the perfect actor to play Atticus.

Diary of Anne Frank --
the black and white original movie made in 1959 with Millie Perkins and Shelley Winters. It really made you feel for the people in hiding and you could see even more what hardships they had to endure.

... But, shall I say Anne Frank?... The movie was very touching and you really felt the pain and anxiety that was in the air...

Star Wars.
Robocop.

The films are everything. The books are just merchandise.

The Hunt For Red October (although my mate disagrees with me).
The book had lots of details that were not too interesting.
The silent submarine drive was more believable in the film.
The plot and the chase at the end were better in the film (more clever, better twists).

Your mind is a better screen than that of a theatre. So see the movie before reading the book if you must.
