Tadpoles are great. I had one once. I think tap water is fine as long as they are dechlorinated, and do partial water changes often. How is it doing on lettuce? They eat algae in natural environment. You can feed it fish food flakes too.

Also, be aware that they do eventually turn into frogs (or toad depending on what kind of tadpole you have). When it does, you need to provide a completely different habitat for it. Also they only eat live food, so you'll be making many trips to the pet store to buy crickets and setting bug traps in your back yard.

Chlorinated water will kill them. If it's not too far to the pond keep using that water.Get a large container of pond water, let it sit near the bowl,so the temperatures are the same(this is important),then change about half of the water in the bowl every day or two. Also, change the lettuce every day so it won't rot.

First off tadpoles are often living in natural pond water with other creatures so they should be fine. They are very adaptable, and I understand your son caring for them, you could put them in some shallow water in a paddling pool, that needn't be big, it could be made of anything, but not metal.
