It's done with long division:
8 doesn't go into 5, so write "0." for the ones digit of your answer.
Multiply the divisor (5) by 10 and move down to the tenths digit. 8 goes into 50 six times (48), so write "6" for the tenths digit of your answer to yield "0.6". Now you have a remainder of 2 (50 - 48).
Multiply the remainder (2) by 10 to move down to the hundredths digit. 8 goes into 20 twice (16), so write "2" for the hundredths digit of your answer to yield "0.62". Now you have a remainder of 4 (20 - 16).
Multiply the remainder (4) by 10 to move down to the thousandths digit. 8 goes into 40 five times (40), so write "5" for the thousandths digit of your answer to yield "0.625". Now you have a remainder of zero.
When the remainder reaches zero, you're done converting the fraction to a decimal. The answer you have at this point is 0.625.
Some fractions will never get a remainder of zero, you'll get a repeating series (like 0.09090909... = 1/11, 0.142857142857142857... = 1/7) forever. So when you are converting, keep an eye open for when you see a remainder you've seen before, indicating that it is repeating.

5 is the same as 5.0. As 8 won't go into 5, the fist digit is 0 followed by a decimal point.
You the divide 50 by 8 = 6 leaving 2. Add a zero = 20
20 ÷ 8 = 2 leaving 4. Add a zero = 40. 40 ÷ 8 = 5
5.0 ÷ 8 = 0.625

First step would be to convert the denominator to a power of 10.
5 / 8 = (5 * 125) / (8 * 125) = 625 / 1000
Move the decimal point to the left of 625 by 3 places.
625 / 1000 = 0.625

to change a fraction to a decimal you need to divide the top by the bottom.
to do this question I changed 5/8 to 4/8+1/8
which is 0.5+0.125=0.625

A fraction is the same thing as division
5/8 means the same as 5÷8
5÷8 = .625

You just do long division, 8 into 5. As long as we still use the English system of units in the US, with inches and fractions, it is good to memorize decimal equivalents of the common fractions--half, quarters, eighths.

Imagine 5 pies. Lets cut them into halves and give each half to 8 people.
There will be 2 halves leftover, right?
Divide each have by half.
Divde each quarter by half.
Now the 2 halves have become 8 slices!
Each slice is a half of a quarter (0.5 or 0.25) or an eighth (0.125).
If you give a slice to each of the eight people, they would have in total a half-pie (0.5) and an eighth of a pie (0.125).
So they would have (0.5 + 0.125 = 0.625)!
