You've gotten several answers and basically they are all the same. Adding RAM is the first and best way to speed up a slow machine, as long as it's the same RAM - SDRAM, DRAM, etc. But adding 128 Mb won't help - adding 256 will. If you have XP, you need 512, which is two 256 Mb sticks. If you have two slots, leave the current 256 where it is and add another 256 in the second slot. If you aren't sure what kind you have, download a simple scanning program from Crucial that will tell you exactly what you have and even price some for you.

Depends on the type of memory. With most "modern" systems, you can mix to different chips as long as they are the same type (SRAM, DDRAM, etc) and the same speed.

Worst that can happen is the computer will not boot or will give an error with both chips in it. If it does, remove the 128 chip.

You can, but the motherboard won't like it, and if you want it to work right you will need to do tweaks in the bios. I think you really need a new computer, and adding 128 mb of ram won't do much.

As long as it's the same type (ie technology and speed).

Its so cheap now, why stick at 128Mb more? XP benefits from going higher...

I run a mixed equipment, 512 & 1gig. it particularly works super for me! Your equipment assist you to understand if that is going to artwork or not... as quickly as you place in the memory verify the equipment to work out if the mixed chips upload up. If not basically eliminate the smallest one.

As long as they are the same type of ram, and speed isn't an issue, then it'll be fine.

you can mix as long as your motherboard will accept memory not in pairs. also if the memory is not the same speed it will default to the slowest speed.
