If you mix 2 Volume of Coarse Agrregate ( broken stone) & 2 Volume of Sand (fine Agrregate) while making concrete you will get only 3 volume of total aggreates. This is because 1 volume of sand will fill voids of the other. Hence 2+2 can be 3 or even less depending up on the nature of "2" even though mathematically 2+2= 4

What base/radix are we counting in? In decimal (base 10), the answer is 4, but in quaternary (base 4) the answer is 10... :)
