Cutting the nails is hard to do, I cheat by putting some rough stones in there inclosure..That help rub on the nails and keeps them short, Don't let them get to long, they can cause a lot of promlems like infection, get caught and tear off,my expieriance is it's best to keep them short.......You have to keep in mind that they are not in the wild walking over all the rough terrain, in captivity it is our responsibility to make sure that they are taken care of (properly).

Turtles and tortoises only need their nails and "beaks" trimmed if there is something amiss with their husbandry (substrate too soft, enclosure too small or boring so animal doesn't explore, diet incomplete, insufficient or not properly balanced, UV exposure not adequate....) nails I would trim myself...Google how to not trim too much. Beak I would only trust to a reptile vet as you can do a lot of damage with a dremel tool really quick. The bigger issues I mentioned above need to be addressed to prevent this in the first place.

Mo they don't need them cutting if you have a slate tile in its cage then it should trim there nails on there. Always get an experienced person to cut tortoise nails

I have a horsfield tortoise and his nails were growing really long, starting to curve a bit so i took him too the vets and he did it in no time..i dont think my tortoise found it a pleasurable experience at all but i think its easier for them and for you when you hold them..depending on your ones size obviously! I noticed that even when i left mine outside on the patio they still didnt get worn down so the vets probably the best thing to do even if the tortoises hate it!

If properly cared for and raised on the right sort of substrate, you do not need to trim a tortoise's nails.

If the nails DO overgrow, you need to fix the habitat so it does not happen again, and trim them like you would a small dogs. (Aim a little long, and let the proper substrate wear them down the right way.)

Answer is no. Who cuts them when/if they are in the wild? But if you choose you can. It will only promote growth and you will have to keep cutting. You also need to be careful if you cut it. dont cut too much cuz thier blood runs in the nails
