I'm in a subtropical zone right now and sweating like a pig in shorts while the people around me are wearing long pants. Can anyone explain why?

It's a genetic thing that probably originated due to the climate where they live. Like people in the extreme latitudes tend to have long noses which helps to heat the cold winter air.

People who come from a humid environment tend not to perspire as it is of no value. The sweat produced would not evaporate and hence they would be come a heating unit.

You might try wearing loose fitting pants and see if it keeps you cooler by keeping the perspiration from standing on your skin.

Good Luck

They may be unfit. Sweating is a sign that you are reasonably fit and healthy, that your bodies natural mechanism for keeping you cool (sweating) is working well. This is kinda clarification and correcting the first answer's answer as well, the reason old people don't sweat as much is because old people are not as fit and healthy as young ones.

Something can be wrong with them because no matter how overweight or good in weight you are, your body HAS to sweat in order to cool down. Without sweating, you can easily get a heat stroke or even suddenly die.

Kish has the properly suited answer. A calorie is the quantity of power it takes to enhance the temperature of one cc of water one degree celcius at one ecosystem. So technically talking, it fairly is a unit of power. Sweating is the physique's attempt to alter overheating by applying the evaporation of water on the exterior, cooling the underlying blood vessles. "Burning energy" is a misnomer. you fairly convert extra energy once you help the physique's cooling mechanism. while you're cooling efficiently, the hypothalmus will kick in and raise the metabolic fee, ensuing in extra beneficial calorie production.

Older people are less able to feel the heat and do not sweat as much. Therefore their bodies retain heat without them knowing it and this puts them in real danger.
