Paul D - Just to clarify, I was not getting on my high horse I was merely expressing an opinion!! If he hadn't have owned the dog in the first place - it would never have happened!!!!

He was charged with keeping an illegal breed of dog. He should have been charged with manslaughter as he knowingly commited the offewnce and might reasonably have forseen the consequences.
He should have been jailed for at least 5 years but this country seems to value dogs and their owners a lot more than children.

The uncle was charged with having a dangerous dog and not for the death of his niece. Unfortunately that is the law and some times the law looks stupid. I a case like this there are lots of what ifs, what if the dog had been locked up, what if the niece was not at the house, what is the grandmother had kept the dog away from the girl etc.
If so the sake of argument the law was changed to capture people who have animals that kill people, then theoretical horse owners could be charged with killing jockeys who fall from there ride etc.
It looks bad but its the law.

The uncle was not jailed for the death of his niece, but for the fact that he kept a dangerous dog. It is not the criminal justice system that is at fault, the judge gave him what the guidelines stated. It is the government who force judges to follow their guidelines, and he would have got a lot more if the judge were able to use his discretion, as the keeping of a dangerous dog lead to the death of a child.

Perhaps before jumping on your high horse, you should have read up on this... as has been stated, he's been imprisoned for owning a dangerous dog. The person in charge of the animal at the time has been charged with manslaughter and is due in court later this year.

He may have only got 8 weeks or something random, but he's effectively got a lifetime sentence. He's going to have to spend the rest of his life knowing his stupidity caused the death of his niece. How will he be able to face his family and friends?
It wouldn't surprise me if he tops himself sometime soon.

While I don’t know the specifics of the case – he might have been only accused of letting the dog run free or something of the like and not murder or manslaughter. There is mandatory sentencing for various crimes.

I blame Ellie's parents for leaving the child in the house with a pitbull, why they went out on the piss.

Honestly though, I think the death of somebody close to him would have much more of an effect them being imprisoned.

I don't know all the facts, but I can't see what good his prison sentence will achieve .
