Of course Istanbul. It's bigger than Greece itself. I haven't seen a single person not being happy with their visit to Istanbul. It's the biggest city in Europe. (Even though we're not in EU:)) Night life is a-m-a-z-i-n-g. You can find piece and quite but you can also find the vitality of the city with its various kinds of people.
Athens, I'm sure is nice as well but Istanbul cannot be compared to it:)
I can assure you 100% that you won't regret visiting it.

Both are great cities with great history. I live in Athens but I have visited Istanbul plenty of times and I love it. Athens is more European , Istanbul is more colorful. Athens has great beaches, Istanbul has the beautiful Bosporus. I personally feel like home everytime I go to Istanbul. But thats because I am Greek,I suppose.
Both cities are really very interesting. The decision is up to you.

I don't know about Athens, as i haven't been there. But i can tell that Istanbul is a VERY beatiful city. Very big, full of everything. If you can work on your itenary a little before going, you can have a surprisingly great vacation. But keep in mind that it's a huge and cosmopolite city. I recommend all my friends. In fact one of them just came back, and told me how amazed he was. I normally travel a lot, and have been to a lot of places, and Istanbul is one of the top locations i recommend to my friends. In fact i've a standard note i send to them about 'where to go, what to do, what to eat, where to stay in Istanbul for a 3-4 day vacation'. If you can tell a contact email etc, i can also send it to you with pleasure.

I am Turkish, and I am living in Istanbul.
Why do not you write your country and city first of all ?
What about your country ? Is it innocent ?
Crime is everytime crime. Country which is not important. And everytime guity person goes to jail.

Now, lets give answer for question.
Both of city are perfect. But I have never been to Athens. I heard from my friends.
You can see historical and shopping area all the city.
But Do not forget, we have a Bosphorus.
If you want to walking around the Bosphorus and drinking something or tea, eating grilled fish,
Catch this oppurtinty ...
Decision, depends on you ...

If you're English do not go to Turkey. Look what happened too those Leeds fans a few of years ago. Even the Liverpool fans got abuse two years. So if you want to be mugged/stabbed. then go to Turkey

better nightlife better museums and that stuff...but instabul was once a Greek city...
