Is he doing an about face? Does this mean that the US is dependent on Iran to salvage a bit of face-saving stability in Iraq? Why does he think now that Teheran should take a “productive role” in Iraq’s security after a 25-year break in diplomatic relations with them? Are voters recognizing the about-face Bush has done with Iran, and is this apparent to voters? (I'm living in Europe, and don't have on-the-street opinions... except from tourists.)

Good answers, but I discount the short replies on such a complex issue, so my list is cut to ELofty, Zach, and Scott.
(Kwilfort authorizes State Terrorism - not good in my book and therefore creates enemies in the long run... just want to include that.)
While Lofty and Zach give good, worthy replies, Scott includes what few Americans will, or want, to accept - that a great majority of Iranians like the United States and, in general, the West... My conclusion with this known fact regarding Iranians and the West, is that Bush stands to create many more enemies if he attacks. Therefore, dialogue with Iran is a better choice now, and my choice as the better answer to all is ScottM.

Thanks to all for participating - and I hope that voters and public opinion is expressed directly to the grossly-in-error-in-many-accounts Bush Administration.

It may well be an "about face," but I think it's a positive one.

We need to talk to our "enemies" so we understand what their thinking on various matters is. Remember China? We refused to recognize China for years. We finally broke the ice when Henry Kissinger went to what was then Peking and arranged for President Nixon's visit. The rest is history.

We need to talk to Iran. Don't forget that the PEOPLE (if not the government) of Iran like the United States. They want a democracy modeled after ours. They like "western" things and lifestyles. By interacting, possibly trading, with Iran the people may begin to push harder for democracy.

Iran has more than 67 million people. According to a friend of mine, only about 3 million support the existing theocracy. If the people manage to overthrow the current government, you can bet the new government will look forward to dealing with us.

I think the president is too stubborn for our own good.

If you read correctly they only want to talk to Iran about Iraq and nothing else. I think they want to convey what the whole world knows and that is to stay out of Iraq's business and stop giving the terrorists weapons. As far as the nukes are concerned the BA wants the UN to deal with it. The BA knows that the minute they talk to Iran directly about the nukes Iran is going to make a laundry list of demands. Personally, I feel Iraq was a huge mistake. We should have made a deal with Saddam and gone after Iran from the beginning. At least Saddam was a capatilist. Iran is just freaking nuts and has hated us for 2 and a half decades. Iran had more to do with 9/11 than Iraq did.

Yes, it does seem that Bush is slowly beginning to take responsibility for at least minor aspects of his moronic foreign policy mishaps of the last 7 years. A good leader should be confident and decisive, and should stand by his decisions, but not to the point of denial. Its been obvious for years now that some major mistakes and miscalculations were to blame for the mess in Iraq, and for the president's ugly approval rating. Bush has been sacrificing American lives on a foreign civil war, and has made himself deaf to the voice of the American people just to indulge his own selfish pride and his ineptitude as a world leader. Its about time that he swallows some pride and opens up to some alternatives to this cowboy, lets-police-the-world foreign policy thats been making America seem like something out of a bad made-for-TV movie.
To answer your question, yes, some voters are taking note of this. However, as you can see from the results of the last election, many American voters aren't very bright. They are either idiots, bigots or just too stubborn to go against their president, or their republican heroes. God help America, and the world, for that matter.

Because the coward / tratiors in congress won't let him authorise the CIA take out the mad dog rulers of Iran and bomb their nuclear production facilities. Just like they make the military fight a "politically correct" war in Iraq.
