Ok..here we go.
First, the obvious part. A dual OVC (Over Head Cam) engine has 2, or DUAL camshafts. A SOC (Single Overhead Cam) engine has 1, or a single.
Now the other stuff......The lighter the valve train is, the higher the engine can rev. That's why a 2-stroke revs so high.....they HAVE no valve train weight!
Now a SOC engine, while it has no push rods, still have rocker arms (think of the early 750 Honda 4's), to transfer the cam movement to the valves.
A DOC engine has no rocker arms. Rather, the cams drive a follower, that works directly on the ends of the valves.
Like everything in life, it's a trade-off. On the 750 Hondas, the early SOV engines' valve train weighed more, thus couldn't rev as high.
HOWEVER, the DOC, while lighter valve train=higher revs, the valves were harder to adjust, requiring a special tool (actually, a 2-piece tool. One to depress the follower, the other to hold the follower down), and a valve cover gasket replacement.

a DOHC(Dual Over Head Camshaft) gives a better transmission of power from the engine to the wheels of ur ride via the transmission system. A typical DOHC engine gives the vehicle the advantage to have
-higher torque(Faster acceleration)
-and higher BHP(more power to attain a higher top speed)
So when it comes to performance of the engine the DOHC as an upper hand over the SOHC(Single Over Head Camshaft) coz of the extra camshaft the power causes less stress on the cam shafts thus making the engine more durable to sudden acceleration.

neither design will by itself affect performance. The engine designer can choose several ways to operate the valves. The latest technology is Variable vane opening. Typically the more valves per cylinder, will mean the faster a cylinder can breathe and exhaust its products of combustion.
So Bikes with 4 valves per cyl usually breathe better. that does not mean that they go faster.
In the end there is very little substitute for cubic inches or CC

with a duel you have 2 camshafts in order to open and close more valves than a single cam . the more valves the bigger the intake of air which = to better performance

DOHC make more power because the valve stem included angle is less(the combustion chamber has a better shape), and it can rev higher because the valve train weighs less.
Adjustments are more expensive with dohc since the cams must be removed. A sohc motor has set screws for valve adjustment.

Stretch nailed it for ya ,what the other fellows wrote was in no way even close to being intelligent and we are all some how more stupid for having read that crap . what stretch forgot to mention was that the old sohc 750 hondas were the most awsome four cylinder engines ever built just stand near one you can feel it but that don't make him a bad guy .
