Ok...I'm not trying to cheat the city or nothing.....I could see getting a building permit if I were putting in privacy fence or something like that.....but I'm just having to put in a flimsy lattice "screen" to keep my neighbors kids from throwing trash in my yard & tormenting my poor dogs. I already have an existing chain link fence (which the little darlings climb, it's only 42" high) so I just wanted to make a "screen" taller then 42" to keep the kids out.

I am on a VERY tight budget, and I guess a permit would run about $25 or so....I know that doesn't seem like much to some but it's gold to me. I don't see the point in spending it for a project like this...but I don't want to get in trouble either.

I live in a nice neighborhood that has gone downhill in a big way....my neighbors all build & tear down stuff all the time (like the farmer who bought the house behind me and now has kennel wire & hog pannel dog pens....about 5 of them all over his yard.

I DO live in city limits, in residential area. A farmer bought a residential home behind me that happened to have a large lot, and put up the kennels all over the place. While this is a nice neighborhood area (if you go about 2 blocks from my house) my particular neighborhood...all my neighbors seem to think they own landfills. Only myself and one other neighbor doesn't trash out their property.

Double check to make sure you need a building permit for that. Different states have different laws. In my state I wouldn't need a permit to put up a fence. So you may not need one at all. If you do, PAY the fee. They can make you take it down if you don't, and in some cases they can fine you, if fines are not paid, they can put a lien on your house. Even if the $25 is gold to you, it is peanuts compared to what you could be looking at taking your fence and paying fines would cost. A friend of mine is going through this right now. Not only is the town making her take her shed down, but her neighbors are suing her too!

You will have to perform the necessary corrections to the existing deck or have the contractor correct it himself. I would assume the contractor is not licensed to build the deck, otherwise he would have gotten a permit or know the dimensions are not within building codes rule. If you don't have it corrected, they will have you remove the deck at your expense, or they will remove it themselves and send you the bill, and maybe fine you at the same time. I am surprised they did not have you do this the first time when you can't produce a building permit.

Putting up a fence requuires a permit. If the township sees the fence and you don't have the permit posted they can throw some hefty fines on you and perhaps make you remove the fence. So it's definately worth getting a $25 permit. Your fines will be a lot more!!!!

you could call the city where ever you have to get one at and ask if you need a permit for something like this. explain the situation and maybe they won't make you have one, but i am afraid if it is a law in your town then if you put it up without one they coud make you take it down or fine you, and make you get one.. every town is different... i think it is silly you have to have a permit to improve your own property but thats our governorment for you.. in most town only if you live in the city limits do you need a permit to build or remodel.

Putting up a "fence" I don't believe requires a building permit. And if you need a building permit and don't acquire one you just get fined. Call the city and ask them, but I don't think you will need a permit.

I'd say City Girl has the most immediate, direct solution. The best answer will come from the Town/city/municipality where you live, from the agency governing permits. The situation can differ from place to place, but best to ask first, rather than be cited after the fact, and/or have to remove whatever you do.

It is a ripoff, but those are the rules. You may be fined, or have the fence town down, which may cost you more money.
