After Chirac's continuous alienation of France from the United States, it is quite valuable that his party not remain in power. Had the socialists continued to hold the Prime Minister's office, it is my belief that France would lose more prestige and take further steps into insignificance. In all honesty the French have a strong historic tie prior to Vietnam with the United States and further cooling of relations would prove much more detrimental to France than for the United States.
