I prefer "panties" (if talking about any specific panties, I'd say for example "thongs" though, as I don't like "panties" that much either..), even though I mostly talk to UK english speakers.

Knickers, in Swedish, is a garment you use when you're a soccer goalkeeper. :D Very ugly garment, too.
