My earliest memory of that was Bush41 using it as a negative label, similar to calling someone a commie, in his debates against Dukakis. He had been fighting his own political reputation as a "wimp" and needed to make himself look strong so he found a way to do so. Then conservative pundits like Rush picked up on it and hatred and vilification in GOP politics grew more and more steadily from there. Conservatives have been making ad hominem and straw man arguments ever since and now they have a whole propaganda machine in Fox News to take such rhetoric global.

It became an insult when liberals became ashamed of themselves. They treid to call themselves progressives for awhile. The liberals try the same game- hence the term neocon. But true conservatives are proud of what they are, so no matter how the leberals try to make neocon a bad word, it hasn't happened.

It became an insult when people referred to radicals as liberals, much the same way that conservative is an insult when reactionaries are considered conservative.

It isn't - I am quite proud of it.
Cons seem to think it is - but then again they have also used words like intellectual as a sign of contempt. Says a lot more about them than us (whether that be liberals or intellectuals).
I am more wondering why the sort of ignorance that leads to people not being able to differentiate between liberalism and communism became something to be proud of?
