Yeah I've given thumbs up to answers I don't necessarily agree with too, if they're well written and thorough they deserve recognition. I only give thumbs down to crude answers that are just written to stir or upset, and that's not too often luckily. Some people put a lot of thought into their answers and it's really interesting to read their responses, other times I enjoy reading the short and sweet ones and the punchy funny ones.
I never get offended if people give me thumbs down - it's a personal reaction and I don't know anyone out there so how could I possibly guess what they're like or what they're going through. It's nice to connect with people from all over the world, and it's all fun and games anyway when it comes to thumbs up or down.

The thumbs up and thumbs down is for determining how many people agree or disagree with the answer to give the person asking the question an idea of the general consensus. It is not meant to put down someone for their opinion. There are no right or wrong opinions. This site is not for experts, and you are not being graded by how many thumbs up or thumbs down you receive. It is not for the purpose of rating, the voting section is for choosing the best answers. I have had thumbs down on some of my answers and was still awarded "Best Answer".
Try not to be so sensitive. No one is telling you that you are wrong, they are indicating to the "asker" that they do not agree with your opinion.

Depends on how pedantic you are going to be i suppose.
there are trolls, no doubt
but some give thumbs down because they do not agree with an answer,
lets face it, you are in polls & surveys, and by the very name, the nature of what to expect is clear, A poll, or survey is to reveal the general consensus of peoples opinions. There is no right or wrong answer. A thumbs down can be seen as an opinion.

This is why I think people may need a little sleep instead of being here. If you are so grumpy that you have to thumbs down someone - perhaps you should find another hobby.
Except in the obvious situation - and then you tell yahoo and let them give the doofus the boot.

I'd not call them ignorant.
I have noticed those. They just focus on getting points. No decency. No respect for others.
They mark a T down so their answer gets more points. But you know, I still had the Asker choose my Ans as best answer inspite of many thumbs up and my thumbs down.
Well, that is life!

A "thumbs down" rating doesn't cost anyone any points. The person getting them isn't penalized for it. The giver is not rewarded for it in anyway. So who cares if people give them?

I agree, people give them simply because you don't have the same opinion which is really stupid, they should be use if it's a rude answer or if someone gave completely wrong info
