No, I don't think so. I think it had to do with policies etc. I have heard people saying why they voted for Sarkozy, and it had nothing to do with man/woman issue. Also I think the French people are more advanced in that aspect.

Mais certainement, mon cher. Ever since Maggie Thatcher, everyone (especially men) has been terrified of female politicians. Hillary Clinton won't get anywhere either, not because of her abilities or policies, or even because of her unfaithful dumbcluck husband, but because of her gender. That's also why the Australian Labor Party only picked (the far more able) Julia Gillard as deputy and Rudd as leader, because they were afraid that with a woman leader, they wouldn't get in.
Germany is about the only major country with a female leader and she won't last. The knives are out for her already.

Of course not!!
We are talking about deep politic disagreement between the left and the right.
We are talking about important choices like identity, work, prosperity, massive economical reforms, future...
I think this question is offensive to the French culture...

Possibly a minor reason, however I think it was the Conservative lobby and the fact that people didn't want to see a drastic change from Chirac as opposed to a socialist leader.

yes, definitely - because she is attractive, French women subconsciously took/saw her as a competition/threat and did not vote for her. Apparently, when they hit mid-life crisis, most French men exchange their ageing wives/partners for 30-year-old model -- so since they're small, French girls are brought up to view any pretty, successful, independent women as potential competitors...

I think it had more to do with the scare tactics used by Zarkozy that caused the French citizens to be fearful of those dirty, threatening immigrants invading their country in hordes.

Maybe it was some sort of right wing backlash.
I also heard many thought she was a bit of a wet lettuce.
