I don't think his reason for objecting the card are for monetary reasons. Don't Americans have some form ID already? Why not do away with the Passport, or the Driver's license, or Social Security as well? What is the idea of a national ID card so different from say a driver's license?

I'm not a US citizen, so I'm not sure what you mean by state government and federal government. Isn't the distinction some form of hierarchy here? You can let the national ID card be issued and controlled by the state government, but I don't think that is the issue that Ron Paul is bickering about right?

Why must it be a single database? Can't it be a distributed one?

It's something we don't have yet, and it would provide the basis for a single national database for the authorities to collect all the data about a person.

because ron paul is against big government, which a natl id card would be a perfect example of.

ron paul believes that states should have a majority of the power, and anything that takes away from that is a bad idea.. it would require a new govt agency to oversee the issuing of the cards, keeping and organizing of the records, and the agency would certainly have power over the states on the matter.

plus, there is no reason to have a national id card.. as you said, we already have ss cards and driver's licenses which can be verified by any podunk police station anywhere if need be.

and dont you have any qualms over the threat to your privacy it would be for you? the last thing we need is another form of identity that can be misused by others if they so choose.

I agree. it would not amke us any safer, in truth it would make us much less secure for it quite is uncomplicated to counterfit something, and quite of hassleing with the 50 different states identity classes, a terrorist ought to in basic terms make one common national one! The passport application is national and seem on the mess they are in! We have already got identity's, why does the government want to waste greater funds? and require states, even ones who can't have sufficient funds it, to impliment this way of unnneded application. the full element approximately secure practices is gotten way out of hand and is "excuses" for some to attempt to regulate all of We the people.
