Bak in the days when richardon used to be the capt and desmon haynes opening with lara the team used to be definately leading all the teams..............but then i guess wot i or my frnds believe is......that politics and the player power struck the team......... and they all had the will to become captain and a lot of politics and teams within the teams....thats why there were so many captain changes after richardsons retirement even when lara became the captain for the first time the team didnt do that welll........

although lara is one of the best stylish player....but he wasnt able to succeed as a captain much....infact no others player did as well.....mayb since windies being not a rich country the youngsters strted playing other sports which had more money involve....due to which..the team couldnt bring more super gr8 players as they had before

There is a saying that a captain is as good as his team. By the time Brian Lara became captain of the West Indies, the glory years of their cricket had ended and they were struggling to find talent in the carribbean. Lara had inherited a team that had lost humiliatingly in Pakistan in 1997 with Courtney Walsh as captain. The team was made up of average players and the era of fearsome fast bowlers had ended. I don't think even Ricky Ponting could have done something about that team had he been its captain. Over the years, the same sub-standard cricket has existed in the West Indies and it's unfair to blame Lara for it.

Lara was a Champion but unfortunately wasn't backed by his team, mainly due to yes infighting, politics and a suprising lack of talent and development. Yes they were amazing with a painfull pace attack, but after Clive Lloyd, Viv Richards, Desmond Haynes etc...not much come through. Lara could have been much, much better if they had a side to support him and not simply pick the best player to be Captain. He deserved to play in a Champion team like Australia, not be simply a Champion in a team !

Lara is a great player but the windies players in his age were not up to the mark.
As captain needs a good team, he did not become a good captain.

To captain a team like Australia or a team who have world class bowlers and batsmen in their ranks any one can do but no one can become a successful captain of a team like win-dies,Bangladesh,or Zimbabwe e.c.t.
At least he had given some respectability to the team no with out him the team is nothing more than Bangladesh.

He is a good captain but too bad no one in his team wants to support him. I guess everyone wants to better than everyone else and don't come together as a team. It's very frustrating for me as a West Indian that we're not as great as before. The West Indies Team need to come together and bring the glory days back!

A good player need not make a good captain.Lara might've lacked the ability to command the team and leadership qualities.Look at Sachin.he was a great player but was not a good captain.

Because he was not getting enough support within the team and also from the cricket authorities of West Indies.

he's stuck with a bad team!
he can't do much, can he?

also, a great player need not be a great captain & vice versa!
