I really like Fantine's character. She represents the ultimate sacrifice of love - a single mother who will go to any length to provide for her child, be it working in a factory, selling her hair, her teeth, or even her body.

It is through her ultimate acts of love that she gains the sympathy of Jean, who takes Cosette into his protection and brings her up to be the woman Marius then falls in love with.

I thought the stolen loaf of bread was an enigmatic but powerful character. He spoke few words but gave a stellar performance just the same.

Javert. He shows strength and devotion to what he believes in, and not just going willy-nilly around Paris under an assumed name with a little girl he bought.
