god, sometimes the media are like pitt ball terriers.

if this guy, that's their suspect, is in fact innocent then it will be years until he can walk down the street again without people shouting abuse and starring. and i can't beleive they have camped outside his British home telling everyone about his ex-wife and 4 year old daughter.
if he's innocent i wonder if he'll get an apology?
guilty until proven innocent!!

oh and before i get lots of rants...yes i do hope, with all my heart that beautiful little maddie is found safe and well. i just think that the media sometimes cause more harm then good.
they should stop pestering the police and let them carry out their investigations.

Just think of the damage this is going to cause on this guy! I feel very sorry for him and his family - - - -and all because . . . he wanted to help!

So what if he has a daughter the same age that looks like Madeleine, that would bring it closer to home for him and make him want to help all the more

The press has always been the same - FIND SOMEONE TO BLAME. The damage they are doing is just awful, instead of searching, everyone is now focusing on this guy

I'll probably have everyone here screaming at me for saying this but there was no sign of a break in at the apartment and Maddies parents had left her for an HOUR ALONE WITH TWIN BABIES...perhaps she woke up terrified and went to look for her mum and dad? Yes I have EVERY sympathy with the parents hurt and anguish and pray to God for Maddies safe and speedy return but why oh why leave them alone? It hurts me as a mother that another can be so irresponsible

We've all taken our kids on holidays and taken them in the evening to child friendly restaurants or even used the baby sitting service that was available

Two well speaking doctors who are very intelligent? Imagine the scenario if an unemployed young single parent (shock - horror) had done the same? Would they have received the same sympathy? I think not!

I have 3 kids and I'm sorry but common sense tells me that you DO NOT LEAVE YOUNG CHILDREN AND BABIES UNATTENTED!

Whilst the world throws out rewards for millions I think of my friends little girl who died age 6 , blind, deaf and unable to lift her own head off the pillow....I'm sorry but even a thousand of those pounds would have given her much needed equipment to ease her suffering and improve her life. I have to say in her six years of life HER PARENTS NEVER LEFT HER SIDE!

The media sensationalise everything. It happened with Princess Diana and with the Soham murders. They will have the guy guilty and hung drawn and quartered. There are things that are strange with him though and the police must have some certain amount of evidence to question him but Ive always believed people should be innocent til proven guilty. Also its OUR media that have done this - there's not as much on the portugese news. thats why there's so much of it on. He certainly wont get an apology but unfortunately thats they way it is. However, I think the media have been great to leave the McCanns in peace and not pressure them to speak about this dreadful tragedy. I thought at first the police Sousa was quite arrogant but I now appreciate that he is only doing his job and CANT speak more about whats happening cos of the Portugese law - which I think has to be looked at somewhere down the line. Its very strict on privacy laws. The police havent come right out and named ANY suspect - its our media yet again. Like vultures they are!!!

I think the guy is innocent. He is a scapegoat, the Portuguese need to pin it on someone, what better than a guy they describe as British. Then they can continue to say that Portugal doesn't have a paedophile problem itself!
The media is a disgrace, if the culprit is never found Murat will spend the rest of his life as a "suspect".
As for your comment, guilty until proven innocent, i am afraid that's how it works in Europe. Poor bloke.

I agree. The front page of one of the papers today says "He acted just like Huntley".

Personally I think that is despicable and I will never be buying that paper again.

They are implying that because he was hanging around the case and make an extra effort to everyone else this somehow implies guilt and they are comparing him in the same sentence to an evil man who killed two young girls.

Maybe he was just trying to help? He does have a daughter who looks similar and maybe this inspired his extra effort.

I think they should leave him alone until there is any evidence.

What happened to innocent before proven guilty?

And if they never catch the man or find Madeleine he will be shrouded with a cloud of suspicion for the rest of his life. It could even affect his future career and relationships.

Couldn't agree more. Our media have behaved disgracefully throughout. For the BBC, it's not about Maddie it's about them being given juicy details to report 24/7. They have umpteen reporters over there (why?) and even sent one up in a helicopter to cruise over the 'suspects' villa. The tabloids are just as bad - they literally make things up due to lack of serious information. The BBC sneer at the Portuguese laws and obviously believe themselves to be far above and more important than the law. Both TV news and the tabloids need to take a long hard look at themselves and realise how unprofessional and inanely they are behaving.

I was about to post a similar question myself.

This is absurd. This man's life has been ruined. How are our press able to publish personal details about a man being questioned when there is no concrete evidence on him? His poor wife and daughter have been taken into protective custody, and police are camped outside his house in the UK. How can this be legal?

I hope to God his name gets cleared soon, and publicly, if he has nothing to do with this, which to be honest, I don't think he has. This is not the Portuguese police's fault - they have tried to be as low key and discreet as they can. It is our press flauting all rules of decency and privacy and splashing his face and name all over the papers when there is no evidence to even arrest him. He has an alibi, and I believe he was just trying to help.

This is what you get for trying to help. Other helpers, beware!

I agree entirely...I have been saying on this site for a while now that the whole thing has got out of hand...I wish, like you, that she is found safe and well, but to hound a man who was not initially suspected by the Police, is disgusting...and to even hound his ex-wife in Norwich....By all means make every enquiry but to have journalists speculating on this mans guilt or innocence when he has not even been arrested is just beyond belief. It is clear to me that they just wanted another angle on this story and as the Portuguese Police had not come up with a suspect, the press more or less invented one.
I agree that they should just allow the Police to do their own investigation....it shows our press up for what they are, meddlers and hypocrites...

I do agree to a certain extent, but I can't help thinking they must have something to go on, why would they search his house for 18 hours on a whim? Also it emerged last night he was under investigation for another matter. Obviously it's difficult as we're not getting the full picture because of their secrecy laws, but I do think they know much more than they can tell us, Also they said they didn't have enough evidence to charge him, not that they didn't have any, so they must have something on him. Please just bring Madeleine home safe and sound, that's what we should all be praying for.

The media should back off and let the police get on with it. Ok, so the public should be told what's going on, but they shouldn't be told bits and pieces - it causes so much confusion and uproar!

The man hasn't been cleared yet, so I wouldn't defend him just yet, but I do agree that the wife and child shouldn't have been brought into this. It hasn't got anything to do with them.

I can well believe this of the british public. Having to peer, gawp cackle and probe into the lives of others is one of their most prominent traits. The british public never fail to do this and are so ignorant as to not realise how it indicates clearly, what a sad, ill bred and foul mannered lost society they are portraying. Have these lunatics never heard of the word ' dignity ' ? And for all parties involved that is ? Just like Princess Diana or for that matter anyone who appears on their damn T.V.'s or in the utter junk they read, who becomes the subject of a huge vacuum in such sad lives. Disgraceful behaviour and in any event, who are the british with their appalling image and dark history, to ever judge anyone ?
