for shoot em up games fiddle around with the controls until you find a setting that is easy to use and move around with. find a gun you like and get good at using that one first before you use others. for driving games work hard on your cornering and sometimes it can heelp to use the handbrake rather then the normal brake, to enable you to slide around corners.

Those games focus mainly on intuition and eye/hand reflexes
SO..
simply practice at those games, you will gain both reaction time speed and an added note, the more times you run through the same level, track, area and the more times you use the same strategy the more refined your motions will be.

Take Grand Turismo, my first driving game, i spend hours working on one thing

to get a better time
on one specific track
in one specific car
set up in one specific way

The more you go through the exact same motions the easier it is to build up your reflexes and reaction speed.
you change that without being comfortable and by the time your getting into the groove on one section of it, it changes and you have to re-adapt all over again.

Learn by Rote is what its called, the same motions over and over again, thats how people become the best at what they do.

The best tips I have (there's only 2!)

1) Practice makes perfect! I didn't get good overnight, practice, practice, practice!

2) Don't cheat! cheating does not develop any skill so you wont become any better.

well...i dun know bout shooting games but bout the NFS CARBON you should train yourself in free drift...it helps a lot when racing.well...it is quite difficuilt in the first time and your fingers must be active in handbrakes than just holding the x button....ok?and...when you turn....just move the analog slowly...dont rush.
