This is one of those personality questions, right? (Everyone is either a "dog" person or a "cat" person.) I'm definitely a cat person. And my answers are based on owning six cats, three of which are still with us. All our cats have been stray/reclamation projects that showed up at our doorstep, so they aren't a fancy breed or anything.

First, you can house train them (or they train themselves) very quickly with little or no effort. This is much easier than it is with dogs. And they are more fastidious. I'll take cleaning out the kitty litter box daily over hunting my yard for dog poop any day. (And even after you've cleaned it up, do you really want to use it the way you usually use a yard?)

Second they are much lower maintenance than dogs. You don't have to walk them regularly, etc., though you should play with them.

I personally like their independence. If you call them, they'll come if they are interested. If not, they will go on with their own little mission in life. Oddly, I don't mind being ignored by an independent minded cat.

I find their psychic connection with each other and humans to be almost mystical. Once my wife had very serious surgery and was bed ridden for a couple of weeks. Our three older cats, who were normally EXTREMELY independent, liked to spend a lot of time outside, and seldom slept on a bed, did a remarkable thing. It was as if they got together and organized a schedule about who would sleep beside my wife and for how long. For two weeks, she was not without a cuddling, purring kitty to comfort her for more than 15 minutes, 24 hours a day. It was amazing to watch.

Finally, I appreciate the longevity of cats. Ours have averaged 15-18 years, which is pretty much long enough to raise a kid on, at least. Speaking of which, they also seem to be less dangerous to kids.

Dogs as companions to spend time with on walks , playing games, greeting you at the door as if you are the best thing that ever happened to them. Cats are just there for the most part and they have a very calming effect . Given the choice though? Dogs.
