It's almost Midnight in So Cal. I got curious about the word "midnight" and looked it up. Dictionary.com says that it's the middle of the night. Does that make sense?

It will be truly midnight if the sunset is at 6 PM and the sunrise next morning is at 6 AM. The 24 hour period is divided into two halves, day and night. Day is from sunrise to sunset and night is from sunset to sunrise. similarly 12 noon will be midday.

If night starts at 6 pm and ends in 6 am, it is exactly twelve hours. Twelve divided by 2 is six. Adding 6 hours to 6 pm would be 12 am. But, 12 is an even number.

the line indicates the middle. It is between 12pm and 1am
The 'middle' is technically 12:30.

midnight is half way around the time zone. time begins at the prime meridian which is always noon. half way around the Earth is the international dateline which is always midnight.
time moving east increases by one hour every 15 degrees or every time you pass a meridian. time decreases one hour when moving west. A meridian is a vertical line
dividing the Earth into east and west.yes, it is the middle of the night.

well, The middle of pm. would be 6:00, so i was confused, but if people say 3:00 is still night, i guess so.

technically speaking, yes... people probably went to sleep a lot earlier when they coined the term, 'midnight'
