This souped up Tiburon can't even compete with a Mazdaspeed6, 3 or 5, so don't expect much power for quick acceleration. The auto RX-8 is slower then a 4 cylinder Honda Accord automatic. The rotary motor just may be the worst motor ever put in a car. Not only does it lack torque or even high horsepower numbers it also gets poor gas mileage and burns alot of oil. For the same money you are much better off with a Mazdaspeed6 which has all-wheel drive or 350Z, the Speed3 is several $1000's less and will whip the RX-8 into submission.

The Mazda RX 8 is much better than good. But keep in mind that it has a Rotary engine which is also great. Lots of spunk but terrible fuel economy. And if you need service on a rotary engine Mazda you are limited to the Mazda Dealership! Any time that you don't have options for repair watch out !!!!$$$$$$ But, if I could afford a new one I'd get it. I'd make sure to trade out of it well before the warranty is over. Also, the rotary engine runs only on high priced high octane!

i would recommend the manual. the acceleration off the line isn't too hot for both Manuel, and auto, but that's the just because of the rotary engine, the true nature of this car comes once you have hit around and plus 4000RPM's,(2ND,3rd gears are very fun in this car). add on the great handling due to the almost 50/50 (48/52) weight distribution and styling i give this car a 2 thumbs up.

If you buy an RX-8, get a stick. It's one of the very best gearbox I've ever used. The acceleration is decent, but it shines when you take it into corner or listen to its sweet engine fly up to 8k RPM.

I've heard only negatives about the automatic. Apparently the manual is the only way to go.

Its decent but pales in comparison to its manual counterpart.
This thing was made to rock and roll, as the one guy said 2nd and 3rd are the best gears and in an automatic.. *boring*.
lol.
Its not hard to drive a manual, and once you do you'll be glad you did... especially in this car.
