Because some people are ignorant & will slag off things they don't understand or have no knowledge of - in this respect, they follow what others say like sheep! They read the "research" which is usually funded by drug companies who of course want to disprove anything that might affect their income! This research isn't worth the paper it's written on. Maybe come & ask any of my patients - many who have turned to alternative therapies as a last resort - and they will tell you how wonderful they can be.
Thankfully, there are the enlightened ones who are willing to try things before slagging them off. Then they find that there is help without side effects available because it works for them - as they are individuals with an individual response to their ills - therefore needing an individual treatment. Anyone who had read my replies to similar questions will know that I'm passionate about homoeopathy. I see first hand, fantastic cures EVERY day in my work - often of people who have been left high & dry by the conventional lot as being incurable or only being offered treatments that make them worst. I have seen both sides of the fence having worked in the NHS for over 20 years but my work in alternative therapies over the last 15 years have been truely rewarding & inspirational. I'm not an unintelligent person - I hold 2 first class honours degrees, so I feel I have enough experience to make the comments I make.

Everything needs the "almighty" FDA or AMA approval. Some natural remedies have been proven over time, I'm talking ancient times but when extracts of the natural remedy are put into pill form, that allows labs, doctors, and pharmacist to make some money. So there's no big hurry to tell the public about the benefits of a natural remedy to whatever ailment. IE. colon cleansing, gross I know but it applies here. In the early 1900's doctors did this often until someone came up with a pill to alleviate constipation. It's easy and it makes money for more companies so it sold. The bad is it doesn't do as thorough a job as the now infamous colon cleanse. Try goggling that and the history of it.

Because these days it has gone beyond chinese and traditional therapies, it has become a sales scam and the potency of half of these remedies is negligible and pointless. I would be using alternative medicine if I lived back in the days where it was legitimate, however seeing the products aimed at draining your local consumer these days is appaling.

Doctors up until the early 1800's used to use these types of remedies to cure diseases- famous historical writers used to claim that a physician's remedy was often worse than the disease, because the formulas were often foul tasting concoctions of myriad herbs and natural substances.

Then we found science, which helped us to find the reasons for diseases and allowed us to target our therapies more accurately, and then we began to be able to prove the effectiveness of our treatments through the use of studies.

People have returned to natural therapies, not because they work- we know that the majority of them don't- they have returned to them because it is part of human nature to believe in the wisdom of our ancestors, and mysticism.

No-one realises that we have come a long way since then, and that we know A LOT MORE now than we used to. Natural remedies are ok, but they should not take the place of proven medicines, especially when they cost an arm and a leg, and are not regulated by any governement body, so you can never actually be sure of the ingredients!

What else can you expect from FDA(Fools,Dolts and A**Holes). They don't make money on Herbs and natural remedies hence they do not approve anything which can actually cure you !

Take Care and God Bless !

In America "alternative" treatments do not coincide with out cultural beliefs and practices in general. Western medicine is an evidence based practice, meaning we need facts and scientific studies, along with FDA approval to commonly accept something. Eastern medicine is more holistic in approach and encompasses the mind, body and spirit, and tends towards treating the cause of an illness or symtom instead of just the symtoms which is often done in Western culture.

Because so many outlandish claims have been made over the years. The FDA doesn't regulate this market like it does the drugs so they can pretty much say anything they want and get away with it.

Because so many of them are abused by people, and that they don't tell their doctors they use them. Also because many claims are made about them that are simply not true and totally unproven.
